He learns in a few days — a light flap: resistance is what makes a cat give up

He comes and goes without you — no more opening the door at six in the morning

The neighbour's cat stays outside — the lock is what separates a cat flap from a hole in the door

Description
Cat flap in tough polycarbonate (PC). It lets your cat come and go without you opening the door. The choice comes down to the surface it fits and how it selects: a standard cat flap lets in neighbourhood cats, a microchip version doesn't.

Cat flap: let your cat out without opening the door

A cat flap gives your cat the freedom to come and go, and saves you getting up fifteen times a day. It also solves a real behaviour problem: a cat that has to ask to go out miaows, scratches and wakes you at night.

The first thing to settle is how it selects: a standard cat flap lets in the neighbourhood cats, a microchip cat flap only recognises yours. It's the first way we sort our cat flaps.

Locking, microchip and fitting surface: what to check

This one is made of tough polycarbonate (PC). Rectangular with a transparent panel, S 29 × 24 × 1.5 cm (outside) / 24 × 19 × 1.1 cm (inside) /// L 43 × 37 × 1.8 cm (outside) / 37 × 31 × 1.4 cm (inside) — check which surface thickness it fits: a solid door, a glazed door, double glazing and a wall don't take the same model, and glass has to be cut by a professional. The four-way lock lets you keep your cat in at night. A magnetic screen door flap for dogs and cats – ABS frame with an ID tag is still essential outdoors.

  • Check which surface thickness it fits — this model measures S 29 × 24 × 1.5 cm (outside) / 24 × 19 × 1.1 cm (inside) /// L 43 × 37 × 1.8 cm (outside) / 37 × 31 × 1.4 cm (inside)
  • Choose microchip recognition if neighbourhood cats already come into your home
  • Fit it at the height of your cat's belly, not at floor level and not too high
  • Lock it at night, when most accidents happen
  • Get an ID tag collar: a cat flap is no substitute for identification
  • Clean the flap and seal: clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth

Fitting a cat flap and teaching your cat to use it

Measure the fitting height from the bottom of your cat's belly: too low and they have to crouch, too high and they have to jump — either way they'll hesitate. Prop the flap open for the first few days, then let it swing.

Lock it at night: most road accidents and fights happen at those hours. And keep a collar with your details on it — a cat flap never replaces identification.

One side effect to plan for: a standard cat flap also lets in the neighbourhood cats, which may spray inside your home. A cat that suddenly starts weeing indoors just after a cat flap has gone in isn't being dirty — it's defending invaded territory. A microchip version solves this for good.

FAQ

What if I have several cats?

Plan one per cat for anything to do with resting, eating and toileting. Forced sharing is the number one cause of tension in a multi-cat home.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S and L. Measure the spot you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

What is it made of?

Durable polycarbonate (PC). This composition determines the care: check the specifications for the right washing method.
