Cat litter tray liners: change the tray without scrubbing

Emptying and scrubbing the tray is the chore everyone puts off – and a tray that gets put off is one your cat ends up avoiding. Litter tray liners cut out that step: tie, bin, put in a fresh one.

The make-or-break point is thickness: cats dig with their claws, and a liner that's too thin tears the first time it's used. That's the criterion behind our litter tray liners.

Thickness, size and closure: what stops them tearing

These are made of tough polyethylene. Rectangle with built-in handles, 64.1 × 40.1 cm / 55.1 × 30.1 cm / 50.1 × 45.1 cm (depending on model) — measure your tray before ordering, allowing for the overlap that folds over the edges. A built-in tie saves you knotting a full bag. Check compatibility with your filter bags for litter trays, especially if the tray is covered.

  • Measure your tray before ordering – these liners measure 64.1 × 40.1 cm / 55.1 × 30.1 cm / 50.1 × 45.1 cm (depending on model)
  • Choose a decent thickness – a thin cat litter liner tears at the first dig
  • Fold the liner well over the edges and check it doesn't slip
  • Use a slightly deeper layer of litter – the liner makes the bottom smoother
  • Use the built-in tie rather than knotting a full bag
  • Still rinse the tray now and then: replace the liner regularly and clean the litter tray with lukewarm water

Fitting them properly, and the limits to know

Some cats scratch at the liner itself, tear it or refuse to step into a tray whose bottom rustles. If yours is one of them, don't push it: a scrubbed tray beats a cat that goes elsewhere.

And don't give up on cleaning altogether: even with liners, the tray needs rinsing regularly, if only for splashes on the sides. The cat litter tray still needs looking after.

A practical tip that saves nasty surprises: put a thin layer of litter down BEFORE stretching the liner over, then the rest on top. The liner slips far less, the claws hit litter rather than plastic, and tears become rare.

FAQ

Where should it go?

Somewhere quiet, away from the food bowl and busy areas. A cat that feels watched ends up going elsewhere — it's the number one cause of toileting accidents.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 55x30cm (100pcs), 45x50cm (100pcs) and 64x40cm (100pcs). Measure the spot you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How many litter trays for two cats?

The rule is one litter tray per cat, plus one. So two cats need three trays, spread around the home rather than lined up in the same spot.

What is it made of?

Durable polyethylene. This composition determines the care: check the specifications for the right washing method.
