Dog lead: the length changes the whole walk

Climbing rope has become the go-to for dog leads for a simple reason: it's very strong, its natural stretch absorbs some of the jolts, and it stays comfortable in the hand even when wet.

Compared with flat webbing, it slips less and burns your palm less when a dog suddenly bolts. The diameter decides comfort as much as strength, and it's how we choose our dog leads.

Material, clip and handle: what matters

This one is made of high-density polyester + reflective stitching + metal snap hook. Standard lead with main handle + second handle near the clip, 120/150/180cm — two metres is the all-round length: long enough to sniff, short enough for town. Too thin a rope cuts into your hand with a big dog; too thick and it's bulky on a small one. Check the clip, the only part that breaks. Pair it with the Hands-Free Dog Lead with Car Loop.

  • Go for two metres for versatility – this model: 120/150/180cm
  • Match the diameter to your dog's size: too thin, and the rope cuts into your hand with a big dog
  • Check the clip before every walk – it's the only part that fails
  • Clip it to a harness: a rope dog lead passes the jolt straight to the collar
  • Never wrap it around your hand or wrist
  • Rinse it in clean water: hand or cold machine wash, air dry

How to hold it, and why never to wrap it

Length changes the whole walk: at one metre, the dog walks under constant restraint; at two metres, he can sniff without the lead going taut. And sniffing is what tires a dog out and calms him down.

Never wrap it around your hand: a sudden lunge causes deep burns and broken fingers. And if your dog pulls, the lead won't change a thing: what you need is a no-pull dog harnesses instead.

A safety detail rarely mentioned: check the clip's weld, not just its spring. A clip whose ring opens under twisting gives way under a sideways jolt, the kind a dog makes when he darts to the side. It's the most common way they fail, and you can't see it with the naked eye.

FAQ

How do I clean it?

Warm soapy water, then air dry. Avoid the washing machine: it damages the stitching on the handle, which takes the most strain.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 120cm, 150cm and 180cm. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than its weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, pick the larger one.

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

What is it made of?

High-density polyester + reflective stitching + metal snap hook. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
