Description
Rope dog lead in polyester climbing rope + foam handle + steel clip. The rope's natural stretch soaks up some of the jolts, and it stays comfortable in the hand even when wet. Two metres is the all-round length: enough to sniff around without pulling tight.

Rope dog lead: strength and grip

Climbing rope has become the go-to for dog leads for a simple reason: it's very strong, its natural stretch absorbs some of the jolts, and it stays comfortable in the hand even when wet.

Compared with flat webbing, it slips less and burns your palm less when a dog suddenly bolts. The diameter decides comfort as much as strength, and it's how we choose our rope dog leads.

Diameter, clip and length: what really matters

This one is made of polyester climbing rope + foam handle + steel clip. Too thin a rope cuts into your hand with a big dog; too thick and it's cumbersome on a small one. Check the clip: it's the only part that breaks. Pair it with a triple rope dog lead.

  • Match the diameter to your dog's size: too thin, and the rope cuts into your hand with a big dog
  • Check the clip before every walk – it's the only part that fails
  • Clip it to a harness: a rope dog lead passes the jolt straight to the collar
  • Never wrap it around your hand or wrist
  • Rinse it in clean water: hand washable – quick-drying
  • Keep it slack: a lead that's always taut teaches a dog to pull

How to hold it, and why length changes everything

Length changes the whole walk: at one metre, the dog walks under constant restraint; at two metres, he can sniff without the lead going taut. And sniffing is what tires a dog out and calms him down.

Never wrap it around your hand: a sudden lunge causes deep burns and broken fingers. And if your dog pulls, the lead won't change a thing: what you need is a no-pull dog harness instead.

A safety detail rarely mentioned: check the clip's weld, not just its spring. A clip whose ring opens under twisting gives way under a sideways jolt, the kind a dog makes when he darts to the side. It's the most common way they fail, and you can't see it with the naked eye.

FAQ

Which length should I choose?

One to two metres for walks in town, where you want to keep your dog close. Beyond three metres, the lead is for letting it explore open ground, not for walking along a pavement.

What is it made of?

Polyester climbing rope + foam handle + steel snap hook. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

Will the clip hold a large dog?

Check the stated load in the specifications rather than the look: a zamak clip gives way where a steel one holds. It's the part that fails first on a dog lead.
