On in ten seconds — a single fastening: he doesn't have time to get impatient

He keeps doing his whole walk — a cold dog cuts walks short, then becomes reluctant to go out at all

He still goes out in cold weather — short-haired dogs cut walks short below 5 °C: with this, they do the whole thing

Dog jumpers for dogs that feel the cold: which dogs really need one

Not every dog needs a jumper, but some do, and not for vanity: short-haired dogs, small breeds that lose heat fast, older dogs, dogs with arthritis and those fresh from a clip. For them, the cold shortens walks and stiffens joints.

A jumper is for poorly heated homes and dry outings; as soon as it rains, you need a waterproof coat, because wet knit chills instead of warming. Keep that distinction in mind when browsing our dog jumpers.

Neckline, back length and cut: the measurements that count

This one is made of knitted wool. High-neck jumper, assorted patterns (bones, hearts, leaves, strawberries…), XS, S, M, L, XL — three measurements decide: back length from withers to base of tail, chest girth, neck girth. Back length comes first: too long and the jumper gets in the way when your dog does its business, too short and it leaves the lower back exposed. For walks in the rain, a Sweetheart fleece sweatshirt for small dogs that's waterproof will take over.

  • Measure the back length from withers to base of tail — this model: XS, S, M, L, XL
  • Check the front legs move freely: the armpit is where it rubs
  • Keep it for dry weather: a wet dog jumper chills instead of warming
  • Take it off indoors if the house is heated: a dog covered all the time can't regulate well
  • Washing is easy: hand wash or gentle cycle, dry flat
  • Choose a wide neckline: a tight collar is the number one reason dogs refuse to wear one

When to put it on, and when it's no longer needed

A jumper goes on for walks and comes off when you get home. A dog covered all the time in a heated house can't regulate its temperature well and sweats through its paw pads. The rule is simple: if it shivers lying down, it's cold; if it pants while resting, it's the opposite.

It's no longer needed once temperatures rise, and counterproductive in the rain. For damp winters, a water-repellent lined coat is the right choice.

A useful tip: on a long-haired dog, a jumper mats the coat around the neck and armpits. That's no reason to give up, but brush those two areas after every wear, or knots form at the roots and become impossible to untangle within a fortnight.

FAQ

Does my dog really need a coat?

Short-haired dogs, small breeds and older dogs get cold quickly below 7 to 8 °C. A dog with a thick undercoat doesn't need one.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than their weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between sizes, choose the larger one.

Does it get in the way when he does his business?

Our models are cut away at the back. If your dog is male, check this in the photos: a cut-out that's too short is the classic flaw.

What is it made of?

Knitted wool. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
