Eats more slowly — ridges they have to work around, so they slow down — less bringing up after meals

The floor stays clean — the rims catch what gets pushed out of the bowl

Dog bowls: stainless steel, ceramic or plastic

The bowl is the most used item in a dog's day, and often the one chosen the fastest. Yet the material matters: plastic scratches, and every scratch harbours bacteria that no wash ever really shifts.

It's the most common cause of chin acne in dogs and cats – those little blackheads under the lower lip. Stainless steel and ceramic don't have that problem, and that's the first filter on our dog bowls.

Capacity, stability and material: what really matters

This one is made of food-grade ABS plastic. Duck with push button, suitable for small to medium dogs — compare the capacity with the actual portion: a bowl that's too big makes it hard to judge quantities. Stability matters just as much: a non-slip base stops the bowl sliding across the kitchen at every meal. For a large or older dog, a adjustable metal dog feeding stand with stainless steel bowls will be more comfortable.

  • Go for stainless steel or ceramic – plastic scratches and holds on to bacteria
  • Compare the capacity with the portion — this model: suitable for small to medium dogs
  • Check for a non-slip base, or the dog bowl will cross the room at every meal
  • Wash it every day: hand wash advised – removable kibble tray
  • Keep water and food apart, in two separate containers
  • Replace any scratched or chipped bowl – scratches are a breeding ground for bacteria

Caring for it, and how high to place it

A daily wash in hot water is the minimum: the greasy film that forms at the bottom isn't visible but it's definitely there, and it's what causes the smell after a few days. Stainless steel goes in the dishwasher without any problem.

Height matters for large and older dogs: eating with the neck bent at every mouthful takes its toll. In that case, a raised dog bowl solves the problem without changing anything else.

One thing few people check: water needs changing, not just topping up. A water bowl refilled on top for a week develops a biofilm on the sides that feels slimy. It's this layer, not the water itself, that makes a dog drink less than he should.

FAQ

What height is right for my pet?

A raised bowl suits large dogs and older pets: it avoids straining the neck. For a cat or small dog, a bowl on the floor is more natural.

What is it made of?

Food-grade ABS plastic. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Is it non-slip?

Check the specifications for a rubberised base: without one, a light bowl moves at every meal and ends up under the furniture.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Stainless steel and ceramic models, yes. Bowls with electronic parts or a reservoir are washed by hand, with the reservoir removed.
