Automatic cat feeder made of durable ABS plastic. It splits the daily ration to match a cat's natural rhythm and fixes the amount — which matters when nearly one indoor cat in two is overweight.

Automatic cat feeder: fixed portions and short absences

Given the chance, a cat eats around ten small meals a day: that's its natural hunter's rhythm. A feeder lets you split meals without being there and, above all, set the amount — which matters hugely, as obesity affects nearly one indoor cat in two.

It also puts an end to 5 a.m. wake-up calls, by scheduling a meal before dawn. The technical points are jamming and backup power, and that's how we sort our automatic pet feeders.

Capacity, jamming and backup: what to check

This one is made of durable ABS plastic. Rectangular with clear hopper and built-in bowl, 18 × 15.5 × 28 cm — check which kibble size it takes, the number one cause of jamming, and whether it has backup batteries in case of a power cut. An airtight hopper stops the kibble going soft. Round it off with a 2-in-1 automatic cat feeder and water dispenser that's wide and shallow, for the outlet.

  • Check which kibble size it takes – that's the number one cause of jamming
  • Insist on backup batteries: a power cut mustn't mean a missed meal
  • Schedule a meal before dawn: no more 5 a.m. wake-up calls
  • Check the capacity — this model measures 18 × 15.5 × 28 cm
  • Test it for a few days while you're at home before any time away
  • Clean the hopper every week: clean the bowl and hopper regularly with lukewarm water

Setting it up, and what it can't do

It lets you go away for a day, not a week. A cat left alone for several days can get hurt, develop a blockage or stop drinking, and nobody will notice. Beyond two days, a daily visit is still essential.

Test it while you're there: it's the only way to spot a jam or a timing glitch. And keep the usual dog bowl out as well: a cat unsettled by the machine must still be able to eat normally.

An underrated benefit in multi-cat homes: a feeder lets you separate portions, so you can put one cat on a diet without starving the other. Microchip-recognition models go further, opening only for the right cat.

FAQ

What if I have several cats?

Plan one per cat for anything to do with resting, eating and toileting. Forced sharing is the number one cause of tension in a multi-cat home.

What are the exact dimensions?

18 × 15.5 × 28 cm. Check this measurement against your pet's build: with this kind of accessory, any mismatch shows straight away in use.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

What is it made of?

Durable ABS plastic. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
