Cat hammocks: sleeping up high, in the sun

An indoor cat spends a good part of the day keeping an eye on the outside. The windowsill is almost always too narrow for him to really lie down: he can sit, struggles to move about, and ends up giving up.

A window hammock gives him room to stretch out full length in the sun, with a view. Which leaves the question that decides everything: how well the suction cups hold over time. It's the first thing we look at in our cat hammocks.

Mounting, load and cover: what holds up

This one is made mainly of polyester fibre. Fabric stretched over a frame, modern — check the stated load and compare it with your cat's weight, leaving a comfortable margin: a hammock that gives way once will never be used again, even repaired. Suction cups only hold on clean, smooth glass, never on frosted glass or a frame. A window perch with cosy cushion for cats mounted on the wall sidesteps the issue entirely.

  • Clean the glass with alcohol before fitting — one greasy smear is enough to make the suction cups let go
  • Check the load capacity with a margin — this model is the modern style
  • Refit the suction cups every month — they loosen slowly with no visible sign

Where to fit it, and precautions

The right window gets the morning sun, looks out on movement — street, garden, bird feeder — and isn't in a draught. A south-facing window in summer turns into an oven and the cat abandons it.

Don't fit it on a window left tilted open: it's a well-known deadly trap for cats, who get wedged as they slip. If your windows aren't suitable, a window perch fixed to the wall does the same job without suction cups.

A monthly check that takes ten seconds: press each suction cup to re-seat it, then pull the hammock towards you. Suction cups almost never let go all at once — they loosen gradually, and one day the fall comes without warning.

FAQ

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.

Is it suitable for an older pet?

Check the thickness of the filling: above eight centimetres it genuinely relieves the joints. Below that, it's a mat, not a mattress.

Which size should I choose?

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add about ten centimetres. A bed that's too snug won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.
