Dog sofa: a bed with armrests to rest their head on

Many dogs sleep with their head raised, resting on an armrest or against a cushion. It's not a quirk: this position keeps the airways clear and eases the neck, especially in older dogs and flat-faced breeds.

A dog sofa recreates exactly what your own sofa gave them, and gives them a place that's all theirs. Firmness is still the deciding factor, and it's how we pick our dog sofas.

Firmness, cover and sides: what lasts

This one is made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) + soft faux-fur cover. Round paw-shaped bed, 3 sizes — measure your dog lying down, then add room for the armrests, which take up a real share of the stated surface. A seat that flattens turns the sofa into a plain mat within two months. Check that the cover comes off completely. For a dog who sprawls, a cosy dog sofa – royal rest and calm will be more comfortable.

  • Measure your dog lying down and add room for the armrests – this model: 3 sizes
  • Test the seat's firmness: a dog sofa that squashes becomes a mat in two months
  • Check that the cover comes off completely: hand cleaning recommended
  • Put it where they already sleep, not where it suits you
  • Go for a non-slip base on tiled floors
  • Lay a blanket over it: it's far easier to wash than the cover

Placing it, and getting them to use it

A dog takes to a bed placed where they already slept, not where the furniture looks nice. Watch for a few days: they almost always have one or two favourite spots, where they can see the room and the door. That's where it should go.

Add a blanket on top from day one: it catches hair and dust, and washes without removing the cover. For a dog that prefers to sleep flat and cool, a firm dog mattress will suit better.

One thing people always forget: the entry height. For an older or arthritic dog, a twenty-centimetre edge to step over is enough for the bed never to be used. A comfy seat never makes up for an entry that's too high.

FAQ

How do I clean it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying for rubber and plastic; machine wash at 30 °C in a laundry bag for plush, as long as the seams are intact.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (70x70x15cm), L (90x90x20cm) and XL (110x110x20cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Will it stand up to a dog that chews?

No toy is indestructible. Dense rubber models last much longer than plush, but a determined chewer will get the better of them eventually: keep an eye on its condition and replace it before pieces come off.

What is it made of?

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) + soft faux-fur cover. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
