Description
Dog carrier bag in PVC plastic. The rigid base is the deciding factor: without it, the bag folds in on your dog with every step. Also check for ventilation on several sides, and the dimensions your airline or transport operator requires.

Dog carrier bag: train, plane and vet visits

A carrier bag is first and foremost about keeping your dog calm in an enclosed space: on the train, in the vet's waiting room, in a building's lobby. Many airlines and transport operators require one, with precise dimensions that are best checked before you buy.

Real comfort comes down to two things: a rigid base, so your dog isn't swung about in a fabric hammock, and ventilation on several sides. That's how we choose our dog carrier bags.

Size, ventilation and rigid base: what to check

This one is made of PVC plastic. Hard shell with zip closure, 42 × 28 × 33 cm — your dog must be able to stand, turn around and lie down: that's the airline rule, and it's also the decent minimum. Check the base: without a rigid panel, the bag folds in on them with every step. For car journeys, an option such as breathable Foldable Pet Carrier Bag will be more stable.

  • Check your dog can stand, turn around and lie down — bag size: 42 × 28 × 33 cm
  • Insist on a rigid base, otherwise the dog carrier bag folds in on your dog with every step
  • Check for ventilation on at least two sides — a single window doesn't ventilate anything
  • Check the dimensions your airline requires BEFORE you buy — they vary a lot
  • Clip on the inner safety lead before opening the zip
  • Clean it after every trip: wipe with a damp cloth. Inner cushion hand washable

Getting your dog used to the bag before the first trip

A dog doesn't settle into a bag just because you put them in it. Leave it open in the living room, line it with a familiar blanket, give treats in it. Three to four days is usually enough, and it saves you a disastrous first trip.

Never carry a closed bag in strong heat and never leave it in the sun: the temperature inside rises within minutes. For car journeys, one of our hard-sided crates strapped to the back seat is safer than a bag on the floor.

One check to do before departure day: load the bag with your dog and carry it around at home for five minutes. A bag that feels comfortable empty can become unbearable on the shoulder with seven kilos inside — and that's the kind of thing you discover on a station platform.

FAQ

How much weight can it hold?

The maximum load is listed in the specifications. Allow a margin: a pet that moves puts more strain on it than its resting weight.

What are the exact dimensions?

42 × 28 × 33 cm. Check this measurement against the space you have in mind before ordering: it's the one behind most returns when it's only read afterwards.

Is it allowed on planes or trains?

Every carrier sets its own size limits: check the dimensions listed in the specifications against your airline or rail company's rules before buying. No bag is accepted everywhere.

What is it made of?

PVC plastic. The material dictates the care, so check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
