Getting your dog used to the bag before the first trip

A dog doesn't settle into a bag just because you put them in it. Leave it open in the living room, line it with a familiar blanket, give treats in it. Three to four days is usually enough, and it saves you a disastrous first trip.

Never carry a closed bag in strong heat and never leave it in the sun: the temperature inside rises within minutes. For car journeys, one of our hard-sided crates strapped to the back seat is safer than a bag on the floor.

One check to do before departure day: load the bag with your dog and carry it around at home for five minutes. A bag that feels comfortable empty can become unbearable on the shoulder with seven kilos inside — and that's the kind of thing you discover on a station platform.

How do I get my pet used to it?

Leave the bag open in the room for several days before you travel, with a familiar blanket inside. A pet that first meets its bag on the day of the journey will find it stressful.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S (34×24 ×24cm), Medium (41×27×25cm) and Large (48×27×27cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.
