First time in the water, and the dogs who need it most

The first swim should be somewhere calm and shallow, where your dog can touch the bottom. Let him go in on his own – never throw him in. A dog who gets scared the first time will keep that fear, life jacket or not.

Take the jacket off as soon as he's out of the water: worn wet for hours, it traps moisture and irritates the skin. And remember, a life jacket never replaces supervision. To teach your dog to love the water, a dog paddling pool at home is the best place to start.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Will my cat accept it?

Cats accept what they discover on their own. Put the accessory in a room they use, without showing it to them, and give it two or three days before drawing any conclusions.
