Long line dog lead: freedom without giving up on recall

A long line is the recall tool. It gives your dog enough freedom to wander off and come back, while keeping a physical link: you never reward a failed recall, and your dog never gets into the habit of not coming back.

Five metres is the training length: enough to give them room, short enough to stay manageable on a walk. It's the most popular size among our long line dog leads.

Length, material and clip: what matters

This one is made of woven polyamide webbing. Flat long line with stitched loop handle and metal snap hook, lengths available: 3M, 6M, 9M — flat webbing doesn't tangle and slides through your hand without rope burn, unlike round rope. Check the snap hook: it's the only part that really breaks. Clip it to a harness, never to a collar. Compared with a black long line with foam handle for dogs – 1.5 m to 20 m, it has no mechanism that can fail.

Using it in the field, and the pitfalls to avoid

The right method is to let it trail on the ground and only pick it up when needed: your dog forgets it's attached, and you can still stop them. Call, reward, release — and never call them back just to end the walk.

Never wrap it around your hand: a sudden lunge causes rope burns and broken fingers. In open spaces and with a reliable dog, a retractable dog lead gives even more freedom.

The mistake that ruins recall: calling your dog only to clip the lead back on and head home. Within a few weeks, they learn that coming back ends the walk. Call them ten times for a treat and a release, and only once to go home.

FAQ

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 3M, 6M and 9M. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than its weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, pick the larger one.

Will the clip hold a large dog?

Check the stated load in the specifications rather than the look: a zamak clip gives way where a steel one holds. It's the part that fails first on a dog lead.
