Description
Dog mattress in polyester (faux fur + Oxford base) - high-density polyester fibre filling. For a large or older dog, density is what counts: a cushion that flattens under his weight won't ease a single joint, however thick it claims to be.

Mattress for older, large or arthritic dogs

A dog that sleeps straight on tiles develops calluses on its elbows and wakes up stiff. With large breeds and older dogs it's even clearer: their weight presses on the joints all night, and the first half-hour of the morning shows it.

A proper mattress fixes this with thickness and density, not softness. A cushion that flattens under their weight does nothing at all, and that's what sets apart our dog mattress.

Thickness, density and cover: what makes the difference

This one is made of polyester (faux fur + Oxford base) - high-density polyester fibre filling. Rectangular, flat surface with no raised edge, available in several sizes – suits small, medium and large dogs — measure your dog lying on his side, legs stretched out, and add ten centimetres. Density beats stated thickness: a ten-centimetre mattress that squashes down to two is worth less than a firm five-centimetre one. Check that the cover comes off. For a dog who likes to snuggle up against a side, a woven summer cooling bed with cartoon print for dogs and cats will suit better.

  • Measure your dog lying on his side and add ten centimetres — this mattress comes in several sizes – suits small, medium and large dogs
  • Look at density before thickness: a dog mattress that squashes flat relieves nothing
  • Check that the cover comes off and goes in the washing machine: hand washable – delivered vacuum-packed (48 h to regain its shape)
  • Put it out of the way and away from floor-level draughts
  • Replace it as soon as a permanent dip forms: it means the foam is done
  • Go for a non-slip base on tiled floors

Where to put it, and when to replace it

The best spot is quiet, out of the way, and definitely not in a floor-level draught. Many dogs pick a spot where they can see the front door: put it there rather than in a room on its own, and it will get used.

A mattress needs replacing once a permanent dip has formed — at that point the foam won't bounce back and your dog is sleeping on the hard floor again. For a dog that likes to support its back, a dog sofa with raised sides will suit better.

A simple test for density: press your fist into the centre with all your weight. If your fist touches the floor, the mattress won't hold a thirty-kilo dog for a whole night. It's more reliable than any thickness printed on the label.

FAQ

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (74x46cm), L (89x56cm), XL (104x74cm) and XXL (122x76cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.

What is it made of?

Polyester (faux fur + Oxford base) - High-density polyester fibre filling. This composition is what determines the care: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
