Dog life jacket: swimming isn't floating

Lots of dogs can swim for a few minutes; very few can stay afloat for long. At sea, in a river or on a boat, tiredness sets in fast and the current does the rest. A life jacket doesn't replace supervision – it buys you the time you need to step in.

Some breeds barely float at all: bulldogs, pugs, boxers, dachshunds, and any very muscular or short-nosed dog. For them, it's not a comfort accessory. That's what guides our dog life jackets.

Buoyancy, handle and straps: the three safety essentials

This one is made of polyester. Buoyancy vest with ergonomic handle and lead ring, see size guide — measure chest girth and back length. Three things count: buoyancy under the chest, which keeps the head above water; the back handle, which lets you lift your dog out in one move; and straps that don't ride up. For calm first lessons, a bee dog life jacket in shallow water beats the sea.

  • Check the back handle – it's what lets you lift a dog out of the water
  • Measure chest girth and back length; this model: see size guide
  • Make sure the buoyancy sits under the chest, not just on the back
  • Tighten the belly straps to two fingers' slack – a dog life jacket that rides up tips the head forward
  • Rinse it in fresh water after a day at the sea: hand wash recommended
  • Start in shallow water – never from a boat the first time

First time in the water, and the dogs who need it most

The first swim should be somewhere calm and shallow, where your dog can touch the bottom. Let him go in on his own – never throw him in. A dog who gets scared the first time will keep that fear, life jacket or not.

Take the jacket off as soon as he's out of the water: worn wet for hours, it traps moisture and irritates the skin. And remember, a life jacket never replaces supervision. To teach your dog to love the water, a dog paddling pool at home is the best place to start.

A habit that saves lives: test the buoyancy with the jacket empty, in the bath. It should float flat without flipping over. A jacket that flips when empty will flip your dog too – exactly what it's meant to prevent.

FAQ

Is it sturdy enough for an active dog?

Check the stated material: nylon and dense rubber can take it, thin fabric and plush can't. With a dog that chews, nothing replaces keeping an eye on things for the first few days.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in XS, S and M. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying before reuse. Avoid very hot water, which warps plastics and slackens straps.

What is it made of?

Polyester. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
