Where to fit it, and how high

The right spot is rarely the first one you think of. Blocking the kitchen is pointless if your dog gets in through the dining room; blocking the bottom of the stairs protects less than blocking the top, where a fall is a real risk. Walk round every way in before you buy.

A gate isn't a pen: an anxious dog will climb it or knock it over, and it's best to know that before you go out. For a dog who can't cope with being alone, an indoor dog crate left open and made cosy is safer than a gate.

Something people often find out too late: a gate you step over ten times a day ends up being left open. If it's the doorway you use most, go for a model with a door even if it costs more — that's what decides whether it's still in use six months from now.
