They stay on when he shakes his head — double strap, head and neck — one alone is never enough

He keeps them on his nose — flexible frame that doesn't press on his nose

His eyes are protected in the car — a dog who sticks his head out gets insects and grit full in the face

Description
Dog cap in polycarbonate plastic (lenses) + soft TPU (frame). First and foremost a photo prop, it has a real use for dogs with a depigmented nose, very pale fur or a clipped coat. How well it stays on depends on the spacing of the ear holes.

Dog cap: a photo accessory, and sometimes protection

A dog cap is first and foremost an accessory for photos and summer walks. Yet it has real use for some dogs: depigmented noses and eyelids, very pale white-coated dogs and clipped dogs can get properly sunburnt.

The critical point is fit: a cap that slips over the eyes gets pulled off in three seconds, and your dog will be wary of it from then on. That's what we look at in our dog caps.

Straps, ear holes and fit: what to check

This one is made of polycarbonate plastic (lenses) + soft TPU (frame). Curved, adjustable double elastic strap, vented frame, size S: 17 x 4.5 cm — Size M: 20 x 5 cm — measure head circumference just above the eyes and check the spacing of the ear holes, which makes all the difference: badly placed ear holes tip the cap forward. An adjustable chin strap beats a fixed elastic. A plain summer cap for cats and small dogs with ear holes often stays on better.

  • Measure head circumference above the eyes — this model: size S: 17 x 4.5 cm — Size M: 20 x 5 cm
  • Check the spacing of the ear holes — that's what stops the cap tipping forward
  • Adjust the chin strap without tightening — two fingers should fit underneath
  • Keep it for sunny outings and photos — a dog cap isn't meant to be worn all the time
  • Take it off as soon as your dog shakes their head or tries to knock it off
  • Clean it after outings: wipe dry with a soft cloth. Do not submerge or expose to heat

How long to leave it on, and which dogs really benefit

A few minutes up to a few tens of minutes is plenty, under supervision. A dog that shakes its head, rubs against your legs or lies down to get it off is telling you it's had enough — insisting won't get it used to it, it'll only put it off.

On a dog with a depigmented nose and eyelids, a vet-approved sunscreen protects better than a cap, which doesn't cover those areas. And for the photo effect without the hassle, a dog bandana is far better accepted.

An often-overlooked point: heatstroke doesn't come from the sun on the head but from being unable to get rid of heat. A cap won't protect against heatstroke, and a midday walk is still dangerous even with one on. Shade and water remain the only real protection.

FAQ

Is it suitable for all dog sizes?

Go by the dimensions in the specifications rather than the size label: between a beagle and a German shepherd, the weight is sometimes similar, the build never.

What is it made of?

Polycarbonate plastic (lenses) + soft TPU (frame). This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.

Is it sturdy enough for an active dog?

Check the stated material: nylon and dense rubber can take it, thin fabric and plush can't. With a dog that chews, nothing replaces keeping an eye on things for the first few days.
