Easy to move around, it complements his main bed rather than replacing it. It's the filling – stitched rather than loose – that decides how well it survives the wash.

Dog cushion: the extra bed you can move around

A dog doesn't always sleep in the same place: he follows the room you're in, the warmth, the light. A cushion is exactly what moves easily, which is why it complements a main bed rather than replacing it.

It also works as a car bed, a boot cushion or a spare spot for a second dog. What decides how long it lasts is the filling, and that's how we sort our dog cushions.

Filling, cover and base: what survives the wash

Stitched or compartment filling stays evenly spread in the wash, while loose stuffing ends up in lumps in the corners by the second machine wash. Check for a non-slip base on smooth floors. For a main bed, a foldable retro quilted dog blanket – portable and stylish with more thickness is a better bet.

  • Choose a stitched filling – loose stuffing turns into lumps by the second wash
  • Check the cover is removable: machine washable at low temperature; dries quickly without losing its shape
  • Go for a non-slip base if your floor is tiled or wooden
  • Spread several dog cushions around the home rather than one very big one
  • Keep one in the boot – it gives him a familiar spot in the car
  • Shake it regularly to plump up the filling

How many beds, and where to put them

Two or three beds spread around beat a single one, however perfect: your dog follows you from room to room, and a bed right where you are stops him climbing on the sofa. It's often the simplest fix for that battle.

A thin cushion isn't enough as the main bed for a large or older dog: on tiles it protects neither from the cold nor from the hard floor. For the night, a dog mattress with dense foam really makes a difference.

A washing tip that makes it last much longer: wash the cover on its own at thirty degrees, and dry the filling flat. A tumble dryer, even on low heat, breaks down the stuffing fibres – a cushion loses half its volume in three cycles.

FAQ

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S - 50cm, M - 60cm and L - 70cm. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it suitable for an older pet?

Check the thickness of the filling: above eight centimetres it genuinely relieves the joints. Below that, it's a mat, not a mattress.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Beige, White, Burgundy, Light grey, Grey and Brown share the same dimensions and the same finish. The choice is purely aesthetic.
