They stop sleeping under the bed — pets look for a refuge; give them one where it suits you

It folds away when you have guests — the structure comes apart and stores flat

Cat beds: where he really sleeps, and why

A cat sleeps sixteen hours a day, but never in the same place: he switches spots depending on warmth, light and quiet. That's why a single bed, however good, is never enough – and why an ignored bed isn't necessarily a bad bed.

What he's looking for is simple: something to rest his back against, a familiar smell and a view of the room. That's exactly what we look for in our cat beds.

Rim, material and size: what decides whether he takes to it

The raised edge matters more than the softness. Check the cover comes off. Depending on how your cat sleeps, a striped semi-enclosed bed for dogs and cats with high sides may suit him better.

  • Spread two or three beds around the home rather than just one
  • Put it up high or against a wall, never in the middle of the floor
  • Wait two to three weeks before the first wash – a cat bed needs to carry his scent
  • Follow his habits: move the bed to where he already sleeps
  • Allow one bed per cat, plus one more if one chases the other off

How many beds, and where to put them

Two or three beds spread around beat a single one: one near a heat source, one up high with a view, one somewhere quiet. Your cat will choose by time of day and season, and you'll stop finding him on the clean laundry.

If he ignores the bed, move it to the spot he's chosen himself rather than carrying him to it. And depending on whether he sleeps curled up or stretched out, it'll be either a kitten cave bed with sides or a flat cushion that suits him.

A simple way to get him to take to a new bed: put a piece of clothing you've just worn in it, unwashed. A familiar human scent is the most reliable trigger, far more than catnip, and he'll often settle in the same day.

FAQ

What if I have several cats?

Plan one per cat for anything to do with resting, eating and toileting. Forced sharing is the number one cause of tension in a multi-cat home.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M (33X33X35cm), L (36x36x37cm) and XL (39x39x40cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

Will my cat accept it?

Cats accept what they discover on their own. Put the accessory in a room they use, without showing it to them, and give it two or three days before drawing any conclusions.
