Cat beds: where your cat really sleeps, and why

A cat sleeps sixteen hours a day, but never in the same place: he switches spots depending on warmth, light and quiet. That's why a single bed, however good, is never enough – and why an ignored bed isn't necessarily a bad bed.

What he's looking for is simple: something to rest his back against, a familiar smell and a view of the room. That's exactly what we look for in our cat beds.

Rim, material and size: what decides whether he takes to it

This one is made from thick polypropylene cotton and soft plush. Upturned honey pot with wide entrance and built-in cushion, 65x43x27cm — a curled-up cat takes up far less room than you'd think, and an oversized bed doesn't feel safe. The rim matters more than the softness. Check that the cover comes off. Depending on how he sleeps, a foldable double cat house with built-in litter tray with high sides may suit him better.

  • Measure your cat curled up rather than stretched out — this bed measures 65x43x27cm
  • Spread two or three beds around the home rather than just one
  • Put it up high or against a wall, never in the middle of the floor
  • Wait two to three weeks before the first wash – a cat bed needs to carry his scent
  • Then wash the cover regularly: hand wash recommended, air dry
  • Follow his habits: move the bed to where he already sleeps

How many beds, and where to put them

Two or three beds spread around beat a single one: one near a heat source, one up high with a view, one somewhere quiet. Your cat will choose by time of day and season, and you'll stop finding him on the clean laundry.

If he ignores the bed, move it to the spot he's chosen himself rather than carrying him to it. And depending on whether he sleeps curled up or stretched out, it'll be either a cat cave bed with sides or a flat cushion that suits him.

A simple way to get him to take to a new bed: put a piece of clothing you've just worn in it, unwashed. A familiar human scent is the most reliable trigger, far more than catnip, and he'll often settle in the same day.

FAQ

Which size should I choose?

Measure your pet lying stretched out, from nose to the base of the tail, and add about ten centimetres. A bed that's too snug won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

What is it made of?

Thick polypropylene cotton and soft plush. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Is it machine washable?

Models with a removable cover, yes, at 30 °C. For the others, hand washing and drying flat stop the filling clumping.

Will my pet take to it?

Put it where they already choose to sleep, and lay a cloth with their scent on it for the first few days. A bed set up in a room they don't use stays empty.
