Automatic dog feeder in food-grade plastic. It keeps to regular mealtimes and lets you split the daily ration. Two things decide: the kibble size it accepts and whether it has backup batteries.

Automatic dog feeder: regular meals while you're out

A feeder is first and foremost about keeping meal times regular when yours aren't. A dog fed at set times digests better, begs less and wakes up less at night – his feeding clock is very strong.

It also lets you split the daily portion, which matters for large deep-chested breeds. The technical points are jamming and power backup, and that's how we sort our automatic pet feeders.

Capacity, jamming and backup power: what to check

This one is made of food-grade plastic. An airtight hopper stops kibble going soft. To slow down eating, a automatic water or kibble dispenser for small dogs or cats is still more effective.

  • Check which kibble size it takes – that's the number one cause of jamming
  • Insist on backup batteries – a power cut shouldn't mean a missed meal
  • Split food into two or three portions, especially for large breeds
  • Check the capacity — this model: 3.3 L water + 1.6 kg kibble – 25 cm (H) / 3.8 L water + 2.1 kg kibble – 28.5 cm (H)
  • Clean the hopper every week: removable hoppers – hand wash recommended
  • Test it for a few days while you're at home, before you go away

Setting it up properly, and what it doesn't replace

Test it for several days while you're there: it's the only way to spot jamming or a timing glitch. Clean the hopper every week – kibble dust clumps together and ends up blocking the screw.

A feeder never replaces someone being there over several days: a dog left alone needs walks, not just food. And for a greedy eater, a slow feeder bowl is still an essential extra.

One setting that makes a big difference: schedule the last meal at least three hours before your bedtime. A dog fed late asks to go out at night, and the feeder then becomes the cause of the very problem it was meant to prevent.

FAQ

What if I have several cats?

Plan one per cat for anything to do with resting, eating and toileting. Forced sharing is the number one cause of tension in a multi-cat home.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in Small (3.3L or 1.6KG) and Large (3.8L or 2.1KG). Measure the spot you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water, with no scented products: a cat's sense of smell is far keener than ours, and a whiff of detergent is enough to make it avoid something it was using the day before.

What is it made of?

Food-grade plastic. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
