Dog boots: scorching tarmac, gritting salt and dressings

Dog boots aren't a whim: tarmac at fifty degrees burns a paw pad in minutes, gritting salt causes sores between the toes, and a paw dressing won't survive outdoors without protection.

They're also handy for hikes on rough stony ground and for dogs that injure themselves often. The only real problem is keeping them on — that's the test we apply to our dog boots.

Sole, support and fastening: what keeps them on the paws

These are made of soft, durable polyester. Adjustable boots with harness, available sizes: S, M, L — measure the paw while your dog is standing on it: it spreads and gains half a centimetre. Two fastening points beat one, and the strap above the hock is what stops the boot coming off. Round them off with breathable non-slip dog shoes (set of 4) for cleaning up after walks.

  • Measure the paw with weight on it — this model: available sizes: S, M, L
  • Look for two fastening points: a single strap won't hold a dog boot
  • Try them indoors first: the walk looks odd for the first few minutes
  • Check the toes after an hour: overtightening cuts off circulation
  • Take them off when you get home: a damp, enclosed paw goes soggy
  • Wash them after use: wipe by hand with a damp cloth

Getting a dog used to walking in boots

Get your dog used to them indoors: two boots first, for a few minutes, with a treat. A dog that lifts its paws high is discovering the sensation; it passes in three or four sessions. Pushed straight outside, it will refuse to move.

Take them off when you get back and check between the toes: trapped moisture causes exactly the irritation you were trying to avoid. A few wipes used at that point round it off nicely.

The five-second rule, worth knowing for summer: put the back of your hand on the tarmac. If you can't hold it for five seconds, neither can your dog. Boots help, but the real answer is still to move walks to early morning or late evening.

FAQ

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S, M and L. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it sturdy enough for an active dog?

Check the stated material: nylon and dense rubber can take it, thin fabric and plush can't. With a dog that chews, nothing replaces keeping an eye on things for the first few days.

What is it made of?

Soft, hard-wearing polyester. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
