Cat backpack carrier: travel without stressing your cat

A travelling cat wants two contradictory things: to be hidden and to keep watch. A backpack handles that well — it's closed and carried against your body, so warm and stable, and the window lets them see without being exposed.

It's also the most practical format for public transport and stairs, where a carrier in your hand soon becomes a pain. What matters most is ventilation and rigidity, which is what sets apart our cat backpack carriers.

Ventilation, rigidity and window: what to check

This one is made from polyester. Front carrier with leg holes, available in several sizes — your cat must be able to stand up and turn round: that's the regulatory minimum and the minimum for comfort too. Check the structure doesn't sag onto him while the bag is being carried: a soft bag that collapses turns the journey into a squeeze. For long car journeys, a pet backpack carrier for small dogs & cats will be more comfortable.

  • Check your cat can stand up and turn around — bag size: several sizes available
  • Check for ventilation on at least two sides — a window alone doesn't ventilate anything
  • Clip on the inner safety lead before opening — a cat is out in a second
  • Leave the cat backpack open at home for a few days before the first trip
  • After every outing: clean by hand with a damp cloth, do not machine wash
  • Pop in a cloth that carries their scent — it makes all the difference to stress

Getting your cat used to the bag before the first trip

Getting them used to it matters more than the model. Leave the bag open in the living room for a few days, put a familiar blanket and some treats inside, and let your cat go in on their own. Then a few minutes closed at home, then a walk down the hallway, then outdoors.

Never carry a cat in a backpack in strong heat: against your back, the temperature climbs very quickly and they can't move away. For the car or a long journey, an option such as pet carrier bag placed on the back seat is safer.

A check few people do: put the bag on your back, empty, and look at it in a mirror. If the base curves inwards, it will curve onto your cat once loaded. It's the most common flaw in soft models, and you can't see it with the bag sitting on the floor.

FAQ

Is it allowed on planes or trains?

Every carrier sets its own size limits: check the dimensions listed in the specifications against your airline or rail company's rules before buying. No bag is accepted everywhere.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S (28×18 cm), M (32×20 cm), L (38×23 cm) and XL (41×25 cm). Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying stretched out plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

How do I get my pet used to it?

Leave the bag open in the room for several days before you travel, with a familiar blanket inside. A pet that first meets its bag on the day of the journey will find it stressful.

What is it made of?

Polyester. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
