The buckle won't give way to a sharp tug — closure designed to hold when he suddenly takes off

You can see him at dusk — stitching or a strip that reflects headlights

He wears his ID at all times — the ring holds a tag and address, which a harness put away after the walk can't do

Description
Cat ID tag in stainless steel with mother-of-pearl inlay. Weight matters as much as readability: too heavy, and the cat gets rid of it. Fit it on a collar with a safety buckle, which gives way if it gets caught.

Cat ID tag: light, readable, and on a collar that gives way

A cat that goes out and doesn't come back is almost always found by a neighbour. With a number on the collar, the call comes the same day; without one, the cat gets fed elsewhere for weeks before anyone thinks of having a chip read.

On a cat, the weight of the tag matters as much as its readability: too heavy, it bothers them and they get rid of it. That's what guides our cat ID tags.

Weight, material and engraving: what works on a cat

This one is made of stainless steel with mother-of-pearl inlay. Round, 2.5 cm diameter – Thickness: 0.3 cm — go as light as possible, and engrave your number only. It must be fitted on a collar with a safety buckle, never a fixed collar: that's what prevents strangulation if the cat gets caught. Check it's compatible with your set of 10 paw tags for dog and cat collars.

  • Choose the lightest possible – a cat rejects anything that weighs on its neck
  • Engrave your NUMBER – the cat's name is optional
  • Fit it on a collar with a safety buckle, never a fixed collar
  • Check it's readable every six months – a worn cat tag is no use
  • Check the dimensions: this model is 2.5 cm in diameter – thickness: 0.3 cm
  • Clean it now and then: dry clean, water- and rub-resistant

ID tag and microchip: why you need both

A cat collar is designed to give way if it gets caught, so losing the tag now and then is perfectly normal. Keep a spare, and above all keep the microchip details up to date on the national database.

The two work together: the tag means a neighbour can bring your pet straight back, the microchip gives permanent identification. Always attach it to a breakaway collar.

A useful line to engrave if you have an indoor cat: “indoor cat — I'm lost”. It stops a well-meaning neighbour assuming it's an outdoor cat that will find its own way home, which is the main reason sightings get reported late.

FAQ

How do I measure neck size?

Use a tape measure around the base of the neck, where the collar naturally sits, leaving two fingers of slack. That's the measurement that counts, not your pet's weight.

What is it made of?

Stainless steel with mother-of-pearl inlay. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Can it stay on all the time?

An ID collar can be worn all the time, as long as it's properly fitted and checked every month — young pets grow fast. Training or treatment collars, on the other hand, come off at night.

Is it suitable for a cat?

Only with a safety buckle that releases under pressure. A cat that gets caught on a branch must be able to free itself: outdoors, that's non-negotiable.
