It doesn't jingle all day — a flat tag jingles less than one hanging on a ring

It goes on the collar he already wears — standard ring, nothing else to buy

He's brought back to you if he gets lost — a readable tag avoids the trip to the pound and the microchip scan

The first passer-by can call you — your number can be read without a scanner or an app

Description
A legible number on the collar means your dog can be returned straight away, whereas reading a microchip means a trip to the vet. Stainless steel holds the engraving far longer.

Dog ID tag: what to have engraved on it

A lost dog with a readable number on its collar often gets home within the hour: whoever finds it calls. Without a tag, they have to take it to a vet or the pound to have the chip read — which takes days.

That's why, microchip or not, the tag is still the most useful thing on the collar. What counts is staying readable over time, and that's how we sort our dog ID tags.

Material, size and fixing: what stays readable

Stainless steel holds an engraving far longer than anodised aluminium. It clips onto a decorative daisy tag for dog or cat collars that's good and sturdy.

  • Engrave your NUMBER first and foremost – it's the only detail that brings a dog home
  • Go for stainless steel – engraving on aluminium wears off within a year of rubbing
  • Check it's readable every six months – a worn dog tag is useless
  • Check the split ring – it's what opens and loses the tag
  • Keep the microchip details up to date as well — the two work together

ID tag and microchip: why you need both

The tag and the microchip don't do the same job: the first allows an immediate return by a member of the public, the second gives official, permanent identification. One never replaces the other.

Remember to update your details on the national database every time you move — it's the most common mistake, and it makes the chip useless. And regularly check the ring that links it to the collar.

An engraving worth more than the dog's name: add “on medication” if that's the case. Someone who finds a dog on medication understands they need to act fast, and it speeds up calls considerably.

FAQ

How do I care for it?

Warm soapy water and thorough drying before reuse. Avoid very hot water, which warps plastics and slackens straps.

What is it made of?

Stainless steel. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.

Is it suitable for all dog sizes?

Go by the dimensions in the specifications rather than the size label: between a beagle and a German shepherd, the weight is sometimes similar, the build never.

Does the colour make any difference?

No: Gold and Silver all share the same dimensions and the same finish. It's purely a question of looks.
