5m long line: train recall without letting go of your dog

A long line is the recall tool. It gives your dog enough freedom to wander off and come back, while keeping a physical link: you never reward a failed recall, and your dog never gets into the habit of not coming back.

Five metres is the training length: enough to give them room, short enough to stay manageable on a walk. It's the most popular size among our 5m long lines.

Material, clip and knots: what matters on a long line

This one is made of reinforced braided nylon + EVA foam handle. Flat long line with loop handle and steel clip, lengths available: 5M to 15M — flat webbing doesn't tangle and slides through your hand without burning, unlike round rope. Check the clip, the only part that really breaks. It attaches to a harness, never a collar. Compared with a nylon long line with swivel clip for dogs – 5 to 15 metres, it has no mechanism that can fail.

How to use it, and the pitfalls to avoid

The right method is to let it trail on the ground and only pick it up when needed: your dog forgets it's attached, and you can still stop them. Call, reward, release — and never call them back just to end the walk.

Never wrap it around your hand: a sudden lunge causes rope burns and broken fingers. In open spaces and with a reliable dog, a retractable dog lead gives even more freedom.

The mistake that ruins recall: calling your dog only to clip the lead back on and head home. Within a few weeks, they learn that coming back ends the walk. Call them ten times for a treat and a release, and only once to go home.

Which length should I choose?

One to two metres for walks in town, where you want to keep your dog close. Beyond three metres, the lead is for letting it explore open ground, not for walking along a pavement.
