One per cat, plus one — the rule that prevents most accidents in a multi-cat home

The litter stays in the tray — edges and mat catch what he carries out on his paws

He goes inside it, not next to it — big enough for him to turn and dig without hitting an edge

Polypropylene — product material

Cat litter tray: size and access come first

A cat that goes next to the tray is almost always saying the same thing: the tray is too small, too dirty, in the wrong place, or covered when it can't stand a lid. It's never toilet training gone wrong, and it's rarely a whim.

The size rule is simple: the tray should be one and a half times your cat's length, not counting the tail. Most trays on sale are too small for an adult cat, and that's the first filter we apply to our litter trays.

Open, covered or high-sided: which one for which cat

This one is made of polypropylene. Rectangle, 36.9 × 29.3 cm (M) / 48 × 34.7 cm (L) — compare that length with your cat: it must be able to turn round fully inside. High sides hold back litter kicked out by a vigorous digger; a lid traps odours inside, which many cats won't accept. What you put in it matters as much as the tray itself – and that goes for the high-sided stainless steel cat litter tray too.

  • Allow one and a half times your cat's length – this tray measures 36.9 × 29.3 cm (M) / 48 × 34.7 cm (L)
  • Have one more tray than you have cats – the rule applies from two cats
  • Go open if in doubt: a covered cat litter tray concentrates odours for your cat too
  • Choose high sides if yours digs hard and sends litter everywhere
  • Give it a thorough clean regularly: clean regularly with lukewarm water and a soft cloth
  • Check for a low entry for a kitten or an older cat that can no longer step over

How many trays, and where to put them

The rule is one tray per cat, plus one. With two cats, that makes three trays – it sounds like a lot, and it's what solves most toilet problems in multi-cat homes. Spread them across different rooms, not side by side.

An older or arthritic cat can no longer step over a high edge: cut a low entry or change model rather than scolding it. And the cat litter you choose matters just as much: granules that are too coarse put some cats off.

One sign never to ignore: a cat that steps into the tray, digs, squats and comes out with nothing to show – several times in a row. That's not a tray problem, it's a veterinary emergency in a male cat. A urinary blockage kills within forty-eight hours.

FAQ

Covered or open?

A covered litter box keeps in smells and scattered litter, but some cats refuse it because they can't see what's coming. If your cat is nervous, start with an open one.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in M and L. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Where should it go?

Somewhere quiet, away from the food bowl and busy areas. A cat that feels watched ends up going elsewhere — it's the number one cause of toileting accidents.

What is it made of?

Polypropylene. The material dictates the care, so check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
