Dog wipes: cleaning paws and folds after a walk

Coming home from a walk is when it all happens: muddy paws on the floorboards, road salt between the pads, pollen stuck in the coat. A wipe sorts out in thirty seconds what would otherwise take a full bath.

They're also handy every day for facial folds, runny eyes and around the mouth after a wet meal. The thing to check is the pH, suited to a dog's skin rather than ours, and that's what guides our dog wipes.

pH, ingredients and size: what to look for

These are made of soft non-woven fabric. Round tub with resealable lid, round pad, approx. 5 cm across — check there's no alcohol or added fragrance: a dog's skin is much thinner than ours and dries out fast. A large size is for the body, a slim one for folds and around the eyes. For a deep clean: ear, eye & teeth cleaning wipes – still essential.

Where to use them, and where you really shouldn't

They're fine for paws, belly, folds and around the eyes — with a different wipe for each area. They don't replace shampoo: on a really dirty dog, they spread the dirt more than they remove it.

Never use them in the ears or on an open wound: a dog's ear canal needs a dedicated product, and a wound needs a vet's opinion. For everyday coat care, brush does a far better job.

One habit that saves a lot of vet visits in winter: always rinse or wipe the paws after a walk through snowy streets. Road salt causes burns between the toes, which the dog then makes worse by licking — and repeated licking ends in dermatitis that takes weeks to heal.
