The lock holds against a sudden jolt — the lock holds when a dog suddenly bolts after a cat

No more wrapping it round your hand — the tape retracts on its own as soon as he comes back to you

He explores while you keep hold — the tape unwinds and locks with your thumb, so you regain control in a second

Upkeep won't take up your time — wipe with a damp cloth, store dry

Description
Retractable dog lead in tough plastic (casing) + woven nylon + stainless steel snap hook. It suits exploring on open paths, never town walks. The constant tension it creates teaches a dog to pull, so avoid it while training loose-lead walking.

Retractable dog lead: where it helps, and where it's dangerous

A retractable lead has one specific use: letting a dog explore an open path while staying connected. It isn't made for town, where its variable length puts your dog in the road before you have time to lock it.

What you need to know: the constant tension it creates teaches a dog to pull, because moving forward rewards pulling. That's why it's never used with a dog still learning. The lock is the technical point behind our retractable dog leads.

Lock, weight rating and tape: what to check

This one is made of tough plastic (casing) + woven nylon + stainless steel snap hook. Retractable lead with brake button, 3 m: up to 8 kg - 5 m: up to 14 kg — check the maximum weight rating and allow a margin: a dog that bolts puts far more than its own weight on the mechanism. A flat tape cuts less than a round cord, which burns hands and legs. On a trail, a fixed lead is still safer and clearer for your dog than the Double Retractable Dog Lead with Independent Brakes at full extension.

  • Always clip to a harness, never a collar: a sudden stop on a retractable injures the windpipe
  • Check the weight rating with a margin – a dog bolting far exceeds its own weight
  • Choose flat tape over round cord, which burns hands and legs
  • Never use a retractable dog lead in town or near a road
  • Lock it BEFORE you meet someone, not during: the mechanism locks poorly under tension
  • Look after the casing: wipe with a damp cloth, store dry
Détail de la matière : plastique résistant (coque) + nylon tissé + mousqueton acier inoxydable

Using it well, and situations to avoid

Good practice comes down to three rules: open paths only, lock early before any encounter, and never with a dog you're teaching to walk on a loose lead. One hand on the handle, the other ready to lock.

Never let the cord run around your legs or a passer-by's: rope burns are common and serious. To explore safely, a five-metre long line gives the same freedom with no mechanism to fail.

A mechanical flaw worth knowing: a retractable's lock works far less well when the tape is already under tension. If the dog is pulling, the button can give or slip. The right reflex is to lock short BEFORE the situation arises, not when you spot the other dog.

FAQ

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 3m and 5m. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than its weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, pick the larger one.

Will the clip hold a large dog?

Check the stated load in the specifications rather than the look: a zamak clip gives way where a steel one holds. It's the part that fails first on a dog lead.

What is it made of?

Tough plastic (casing) + woven nylon + stainless steel snap hook. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
