Description
Cat lead made from lightweight nylon. The weight of the clip is the key factor: too heavy and it tugs on the harness with every step and puts the cat off. It always clips to a harness, never to a collar.

Cat leads: heading out safely with a harness

A cat lead isn't just a small dog lead: weight matters enormously. A heavy clip tugs on the harness with every step, throws the cat off balance and is enough to put him off walking.

It never clips to a collar — a cat held by the neck backs out and slips free, or gets hurt. It's always on a harness, and that's what guides our cat leads.

Weight, length and clip: what suits a cat

This one is made from lightweight nylon. Thin, flexible lead, 15 m, 9 m or 4.5 m depending on model — aim for between one and a half and two metres, with the lightest clip possible. A bungee lead cushions sudden stops, which are common with a cat who freezes. Use it only with a escape-proof cat harness with lead that's properly adjusted.

  • Clip it to the harness, never the collar: a cat backs up and slips out of a collar
  • Choose the lightest clip possible — a cat feels its weight
  • Allow 1.5 m to 2 m — this model measures 15 m, 9 m or 4.5 m depending on model
  • Let him wear the harness at home for several days before attaching the cat lead
  • Let it trail around indoors first so he gets used to the weight
  • Easy to clean: hand wash, air dry

First outings, and where to go

First outings should be somewhere quiet and, ideally, enclosed: a garden, a courtyard, a patio. A cat who gets scared outside pulls backwards and can wriggle out of even a good harness — that's the one situation you must never provoke.

Don't expect him to walk like a dog: a cat explores, stops, lies down. That's normal. And check the fit of the harness on every outing — the straps shift from one time to the next.

One precaution before the very first outing: check your cat is identified and up to date with his vaccinations. An outing that goes wrong ends in a bolt, and a panicked cat can cover several kilometres before stopping.

FAQ

How do I clean it?

Warm soapy water, then air dry. Avoid the washing machine: it damages the stitching on the handle, which takes the most strain.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in 4.5m, 9m and 15m. Go by your pet's measurements — chest girth and back length — rather than its weight: two pets of the same weight don't have the same build. If you're between two sizes, pick the larger one.

Lead or harness?

The lead clips onto either one. On a dog that pulls, attaching it to the collar presses on the windpipe: in that case it's better to connect it to a harness.

What is it made of?

Lightweight nylon. It's this material mix that sets the care routine: check the specifications for the right way to wash it.
