Dog brush for dogs that shed everywhere

A dog sheds all year round, and heavily twice a year. The point isn't to stop it, it's to catch that hair in a brush rather than on the sofa. Ten minutes of brushing removes what would otherwise be all over the house for three weeks.

Brushing also helps you spot early what you can't see: knots at the roots, ticks, red patches, clumps of undercoat pulling on the skin. The right tool depends entirely on the coat, and that's what sets apart our dog brushes.

Slicker, curry or detangling brush: which one for which coat

You'll feel the difference on the first stroke: the wrong brush glides over the surface and brings up almost nothing. For upkeep between brushing sessions, a white detangling brush with stainless steel blades rounds it off nicely.

  • Brush with the lie of the coat, section by section, rather than in big quick sweeps
  • Brush every other day during moulting, once a week the rest of the year
  • Tease out tight knots by hand before brushing: pulling hurts and puts the dog off
  • Check the skin at the same time: redness, ticks and scabs show up when brushing
  • Finish with a treat: a dog that dreads brushing will fight it all its life

How often to brush, season by season

During the spring and autumn moult, brush every other day for three to four weeks; the rest of the year, once a week is enough for most short coats. A long coat that mats needs a steady routine all year round.

Always brush a dry dog: wet hair breaks and knots tighten. And for muddy paws or around the eyes between sessions, wipes save you getting the brush out for nothing.

A rule of thumb that avoids plenty of mistakes: if the brush brings up hair but your dog keeps shedding just as much, the undercoat isn't being reached. It's not about pressing harder, it's about the tool.

FAQ

How often should I brush my pet?

Two to three times a week for a short coat, every day during moulting or for a long coat. Regular brushing prevents knots, which can't be untangled without cutting.

Does it pull on the skin?

Not if you work in small sections, in the direction of the fur, holding the base of the tuft. The pain almost always comes from pulling from the tip.

Is it suitable for a pet that doesn't like it?

Start with very short sessions, on the back and sides — never the paws or tail at first — and stop before your pet starts to struggle. The habit builds over a few weeks.

How do I clean the tool?

Remove the hair after every session and rinse the brush under warm water once a month. A clogged tool pulls more.
