Washing, storing and making a dog blanket last

A blanket gets washed often — that's the whole point: it takes the hit instead of the sofa. Shake it outside before it goes in the machine; the hair comes off better and won't clog the filter. Skip the fabric softener, which leaves a scent many dogs avoid.

It isn't a bed: laid straight on tiles, it doesn't insulate from cold or hard floors, and an older or arthritic dog will feel it. For them, a dog mattress with real thickness makes a genuine difference to their nights.

FAQ

Does it shed fluff in the wash?

Flannel and fleece pill a little on the first wash, then settle down. A 30 °C wash in a laundry bag, without fabric softener, greatly reduces it.

Is it warm enough for sleeping outdoors?

No: it's an indoor textile. On a patio or in an uninsulated kennel, it absorbs damp and chills your pet instead of warming it.

Can it go in the tumble dryer?

On a low heat only. High heat melts the synthetic fibres on the surface, and the blanket loses its softness for good.

For my pet or for the sofa?

Both: laid on the sofa, it protects the fabric from hair and claws while giving your pet a spot of its own — often the best way to get it off the cushions.
