Dog costumes: nailing the photo without stressing your dog

A costume is worn for a photo, a party or a Halloween walk — not a whole evening. A dog doesn't understand why he's dressed up; he just notices his movement is restricted. Success comes down to choosing the model that restricts him the least.

In practice: no hood covering the eyes, nothing blocking the shoulders, nothing dangling between the legs. That's what separates a wearable costume from one your dog just puts up with, and it's how we pick our dog costumes.

Fit, fastenings and freedom of movement: what to check

This one is made of soft polyester and polypropylene fibre. Hoodie with press studs and cartoon print, sizes S to XL – for toy and small breeds — measure chest girth and back length, never go by weight: two 15 kg dogs don't have the same build. Check that the fastenings are on the back, not under the belly — they go on and come off much faster. For a dog who won't tolerate anything on him, a realistic lion mane for medium and large dogs gives the look without the hassle.

  • Measure chest girth and back length — this model: sizes S to XL – for toy and small breeds
  • Let him wear it for five minutes at home before the big day — never let him discover the costume outdoors
  • Check he can see, hear and open his mouth — the hood is the first thing to check
  • Take it off as soon as he freezes, scratches or refuses to move
  • Wash it after the party: hand wash only, air dry
  • Go for fastenings on the back — a dog costume that closes under the belly is a pain to put on

How long to leave it on, and when to give up

The time rule is simple: the costume comes out for the occasion and goes away straight after. A dog who freezes, yawns over and over or tries to back away is telling you he's had enough — and pushing on teaches him nothing, except to run off the next time he sees the costume.

Never leave him in costume unsupervised, and especially not overnight: fabric that catches on furniture turns a joke into an accident. If you're mainly after the look, a bandana gets the same result on camera with far less bother.

A rule of thumb for choosing: look first at what the costume leaves FREE, not what it adds. The shoulders, eyes, mouth and base of the tail must move normally. An elaborate model that blocks any one of the four will be worn once, then never again.

FAQ

Will my dog get used to it?

Within a few days, as long as you don't force it. Link the first encounter to something pleasant — a treat, a walk — rather than a moment of restraint.

Which size should I choose?

This model comes in S, M, L and XL. Measure the space you have in mind and, for a bed, your pet's length lying down plus about ten centimetres. Too snug and it won't get used; too big and it loses its reassuring feel.

Is it sturdy enough for an active dog?

Check the stated material: nylon and dense rubber can take it, thin fabric and plush can't. With a dog that chews, nothing replaces keeping an eye on things for the first few days.

What is it made of?

Soft polyester and polypropylene fibre. This material determines how to care for it: see the specifications for the right way to wash it.
