How to choose the right coat for your cat
When the cold months arrive, some vulnerable cats may need an extra layer to stay warm. Chosen well, a cat coat offers comfort, protection and practicality. Here are the key points to consider to find the ideal model for your four-legged friend.
1. The right material and insulation
Soft, breathable fabrics
The coat should be made from a pleasant material, such as soft fleece or lined cotton, to avoid irritation. Breathable fabrics prevent overheating while still keeping in body heat.
Enough insulation for low temperatures
If your cat lives indoors, a light coat is often enough. For winter outings, however, go for a thicker model with insulating padding that can protect them from the elements (wind, drizzle, the odd cold snap).
2. A secure, comfortable fit
Simple, secure fastenings
Velcro or adjustable buckle fastenings are practical and make dressing easier. Make sure they're firmly attached, secure and placed somewhere your cat can't reach with their paws or mouth.
Suited to a feline build
Cats come in different shapes (long, stocky, slender). Choose a coat that fits well at the neck and belly, long enough to cover the back without restricting movement or the tail.

3. Everyday comfort and freedom of movement
Ergonomic cut
The coat shouldn't restrict movement: check that your cat can sit, lie down and jump freely. Models that are open at the belly or have stretchy panels allow more freedom.
Featherlight for easy adjustment
A coat that's too heavy can quickly become a burden. Go for lightweight models — your cat should feel as if they're wearing nothing, with no rubbing or tension.
4. Practical for you, comfortable for them
Easy care
A coat that's machine washable at a low temperature (30 °C) is a real bonus, especially if your cat goes outside or often sits on wet surfaces. Air drying will help keep its shape and colours.
An opening for the lead
If your cat goes out on a lead, check that the coat has an opening for attaching a harness. That way you don't have to take the coat off every time you go out, and safety stays at its best.
The same question applies to dogs: some of our waterproof dog coats have an opening for the lead or a built-in harness.
5. Looks and behaviour
Neutral colours or subtle patterns
A coat in understated colours (grey, beige, navy) goes easily with a collar or harness, without drawing too much attention if your cat is wary of wearing something.
Adapt to their personality
Some cats don't take kindly to clothes. For them, a light coat introduced gradually or worn for short periods is best. Either way, get your companion used to it gently to avoid stress and resistance.
